Brussels, Belgium – March 11, 2026. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 58) has formally issued ISO 14246:2026 (gas cylinder inspection, testing, and marking) and ISO 19078-2:2026 (on-board high-pressure cylinder requalification for natural gas and hydrogen vehicles). Concurrently, the European Union’s TPED 2010/35/EU 2026 Amendment enters into force, harmonizing cross-border approval for high-pressure cylinders and MEGC tube containers. Industry leaders confirm Type IV all-composite hydrogen cylinders (70 MPa) have achieved mass certification under ADR, DOT, and KC marks, enabling multi-modal transport across Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
ISO 14246:2026 tightens leakage testing, fatigue life, and low-temperature performance for cylinders up to 70 MPa, aligning with hydrogen and high-pressure industrial gas demands.
EU TPED 2026 streamlines design verification and periodic inspection rules for tube containers, cutting cross-border approval lead time by up to 40%.
Type IV Hydrogen Cylinders (polymer-lined, carbon-fiber wrapped) deliver 30–45% weight reduction vs. Type III, with 10+ year service life and compliance with global transport regulations.
Medical & Industrial Gases adopt updated UN GHS labeling under OSHA HCS-2024 and EU CLP 2026, enhancing traceability and hazard communication.
The rule changes accelerate the rollout of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, heavy-duty fuel-cell trucks, and bulk gas logistics. Global demand for high-pressure composite cylinders is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12% through 2030, driven by energy transition and stricter safety mandates.
“These global standards remove technical barriers to cross-border gas cylinder trade and secure safe, efficient hydrogen logistics at scale,” said a spokesperson for the European Compressed Gas Association (ECGA).
